We sequenced and analyzed the genome of the previously unculturable clinical isolate Bacilli bacterium strain VT-13-104, a motile, spore-forming, gram-positive, aerobic, and rod shaped bacterium that was isolated from the from the intestine of a patient with duodenal cancer.

Bacilli bacterium strain VT-13-104 is a member of family Bacillaceae, which contains a variety of medically important species that are associated with diarrheal syndromes, anthrax, anthrax-like progressive pneumonia, fulminant sepsis, and devastating central nervous system infections, particularly in immunosuppressed individuals. Our genetic analyses of strain VT-13-104 identified ABC, MATE, MgtE, and MFS family multidrug resistance transporters, in addition to genes encoding resistance to antibiotics, including fosmidomycin, quinolone, bacitracin, chloramphenicol, etc. The genome also contains previously known virulence factors, including adhesins and capsular, flagellar, and sporulation proteins.
Bacilli bacterium strain VT-13-104 spores are highly resistant to heat, antibiotics, and chemicals.
